Japan Hands Over Primary School Project in Rakai District
St. John Bosco Mweruka Primary School in Rakai District has today received improved basic facilities: permanent structures with ten classrooms, furniture, a pit latrine block and two water harvesting tanks. The project which costs over Ush 134 million was supported by Japan and will benefit over 500 pupils and teaching staff.
The school has a high number of orphans due to the HIV/AIDS prevalence in the area. It originally had a temporary block of only four classrooms and could not accommodate all the pupils.
“Education is a key sector that Japan is keen to support since education has been the most instrumental in the industrialisation and development of my country,” said Mr. Masaki Shiga, the Deputy Ambassador of Japan who officiated at the hand over ceremony. The project is part of contributions towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Mr. Shiga called upon the entire community to work together to bring positive change in the lives of the young children and the nation as a whole.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a grant scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan, to support community-based development projects. Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with Africa through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the MDGs and consolidation of peace and good governance in Africa.
